On January 4, 2011, President Obama signed into law the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the most sweeping reform of food safety laws in more than 70 years. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it.
The Coca-Cola Company has begun several initiatives to prepare for the full implementation of FSMA in 2016, including putting the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Certification scheme FSSC 22000 in place at our production facilities. The FSSC 22000 Food Safety System Certification provides a framework for managing our food safety responsibilities. FSSC 22000 is fully recognized by GFSI and is based on existing ISO Standards. It demonstrates that our company has a robust food safety management system.

What Is GFSI?
Many people have heard of GFSI, but they don't know why it is important.
According to The Consumer Goods Forum, GFSI is an industry-driven initiative providing thought leadership and guidance on food safety management systems necessary for safety along the supply chain. This work is accomplished through collaboration between the world's leading food safety experts from retail, manufacturing and foodservice companies, as well as international organizations, governments, academia and service providers to the global food industry.
Some of the GFSI objectives are reduction of food safety risks by delivering equivalence and convergence between effective food safety management systems; management of cost in the global food system by eliminating redundancy and improving operational efficiency; development of competencies and capacity building in food safety to create consistent and effective global food systems; and provision of a unique international stakeholder platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange and networking.
